Meditation. If you've attended any class or session with me, you probably noticed that I mention meditation... a lot. The ability to focus one's mind, to bring peace into the heart, and harmony into one's being and environment in the blink of an eye - sound appealing? I know it did to me! But... when I first began meditating, it was not like that. I struggled. One of the issues I ran into was getting really stuck on "when is the timer going to go off" and "how much LONGER do I have???" and it really was not getting me the results I was seeking. In order to get my mind OFF of the time and ON to my meditation, I tried something different. Instead of using the Timer feature, I tested out the Stopwatch on my phone. What I experienced would change my meditation practice for good! Why? (1) Because the stopwatch counts UP instead of down - as the numbers increase I feel more and more accomplished. I allow myself to slightly open my eyes and see how much time has passed, and this helps to ground me into my practice of meditation rather than draw my attention away from it. (2) I'm not waiting on a Timer to tell me when my meditation is “done". This allows me to come to a natural stopping or pause point in my meditation practice and come back into the room gently in my own time. And I don't fell like a failure if I "am running out of time and haven't gotten anything done" or "don't make it" all the way to when the Timer goes off. (3) Not setting a Timer takes my mind off of time and centers my awareness on being in the now moment. I can release thoughts of “how much time do I have left” (which is in the future) and places my awareness back in the present moment with “ok, I’ve been meditating for x minutes and I feel like I can go longer” or “I feel like I’m done for now.” I set a goal of how much time I would like to spend, but it can also flex organically. Each meditation session is different and, unless you have a serious time constraint on your meditation time, it's beneficial for it to take its own course. The Timer can be jarring when in meditation as well, even if you have it set to a soothing or subtle alert sound, because meditation puts us in a deeper brainwave state. Keep in mind that the amount of time spent is only ONE measure of a good meditation practice. Some days my meditation is short but super powerful - and it's exactly what I needed! I hope this is valuable insider information for you to up your meditation game. Let me know if you try this out - I'd love to hear how it works for you!
